They Met on His Last Night in America, Then Married 18 Months Later with a Georgetown Cocktail Party Reception

Shane Macaulay and Laura Johnson had a whirlwind romance, so we love that their wedding captured some of their whimsy with its festive summer cocktail party atmosphere. All of the celebrations were captured on camera in the photos below by Kirsten Marie Photography.

The fact that Laura and Shane met at all is miraculous: on a whim, Shane had stopped in at the bar where Laura worked for a drink on his last night in DC before flying home to Australia. As soon as Laura spotted him, it was love at first sight. She chatted with him for a few hours, and as her shift came to a close, she made her move, asking him out for another drink. The next day he flew home to the other side of the globe, but they kept in touch, messaging one another nearly every day.

After six months of long-distance dating and flights to visit on another, Laura was visiting Shane in Australia for a few weeks after Christmas. On the first night of her stay, they went out to dinner and came home to a house filled with lit candles and their dog, dressed in a tuxedo front. Laura said “yes” before Shane even had a chance to ask the question.

For their June wedding, Laura and Shane booked the Old Stone House gardens for the ceremony. Following their al fresco vows, the pair posed for portraits around Georgetown as they made their way to their open-air reception at Malmaison. The cocktail party guests noshed on freshly made crepes and sipped the bride’s favorite drink, Irish whiskey served neat.

After a night of dancing with loved ones, the bride and groom left their guests with boxes of Malmaison’s house-made macarons while they departed for their honeymoon in South Africa.
