For workers in the Golden Triangle District downtown, there’s been nothing but bad news when it comes to retail. Last year alone we lost the Filene’s Basement on Connecticut Avenue and the much-loved Borders at 1800 L Street, Northwest. Since then, the former bookstore space has had temporary incarnations as a gallery space (Fotoweek DC, Washington Project for the Arts) and an unlikely event space (BYT’s New Year’s Eve Party, Funny or Die’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner event), but is woefully empty most days.
But hopefully not for much longer. According to Bisnow, the Rappaport Companies-leased space is in negotiations with Nordstrom Rack, meaning there might soon be a wealth of cut-price clothing, shoes, and accessories coming to L Street. Full disclosure: This is excellent news for Washingtonian staffers, who work on the same block (although possibly bad news for our bank accounts).
