Where & When: What to Do Tonight

German film and a charity concert

The second Monday of every month, Artisphere hosts Box Smashers, a series of discussions led by leaders in the local art community who “think outside the box.” December’s conversation features the Pink Line Project’s Phillipa Hughes and iStrategy Lab’s Peter Corbett. There’ll also be a performance from magician David London. 7 PM; donations accepted.

AFL-CIO is hosting a concert to benefit the Capital Area Food Bank. Mike McColgan and the Street Dogs are performing punk-rock tunes alongside guitarist Wayne Kramer. At the AFL-CIO Headquarters in downtown DC; 7 PM. E-mail nfrederickson@aflcio.org to RSVP. Free.

There are two film versions of the novel The Axe of Wandsbek by Arnold Zweig—one made in East Germany and one made in West Germany. The cultural and political differences are evident in the story of a butcher who takes over the hangman’s job on the eve of a visit from Hitler. Catch the East German version tonight at the Goethe Institut. 6:30; $7.
