Ten Under $10: Fun on a Budget

Watercolors in galleries, high water in New Orleans onscreen, and wordless music

Barry Lindley’s “Water Marks,” a new exhibit of the artist’s watercolor landscapes, is on view at Art League gallery through April 4. Thursday from 6:30 to 8:30, there’s an opening reception from, where you can meet the artist. Free.

L’Alliance Française is hosting a screening of L’Arnacoeur (The Heartbreaker) at the Letelier Theater Thursday evening. Starring Johnny Depp’s longtime flame, Vanessa Paradis, the 2010 French comedy tells the story of a man who seduces young women out of their unhealthy relationships. Thursday is pay-what-you-can-night at DC Improv, where you can name your price to see Joe Recca. The comedian has been featured on HBO and Showtime, and won BET’s “Coming to the Stage” competition. The doors open at 6:30, and the show starts at 8.

Richard Press’s 2009 film, Bill Cunningham New York, screens at the Hirshhorn Thursday night. The documentary follows the New York Times photographer who produces the newspaper’s On the Street photo essays. 8 PM. Free.

Wordless Music is a group that performs an eclectic mix of rock, electronica, and classical music—all, as the name implies, without lyrics. Check it out Thursday evening at the Library of Congress’s Thomas Jefferson Building at 8. Call 202-707-5502 to reserve a spot. Free.

Can’t make it to Austin for South by Southwest? Brightest Young Things and the W Hotel are hosting a preview performance by Ancient Astronauts and Frank Mitchell Jr., who are both in this year’s festival. The DC Independent Film Festival is wrapping up this weekend, and one of the event’s most buzzed-about films, The Big Uneasy, screens Saturday. The documentary takes a new look at Hurricane Katrina and assesses why the storm was so enormously devastating. Director Harry Shearer will be at the screening. As part of the Intersections DC festival, two of the area’s leading dance companies, Coyaba Dance Theater and UrbanArtistry, are giving a joint performance. It’s at the Atlas Performing Arts Center’s Lang Theatre Saturday at 8. Buy tickets ($10) from Vendini.

It’s the five-year anniversary of the Nouveau Riche DJ set at U Street Music Hall Saturday. Gavin Holland, Steve Starks, and Nacey start spinning at 10. $10.
