Thursday, September 4: It’s been a long seven months since last year’s NFL season, but football is back in full swing tonight. The Redskins take on defending Super Bowl Champs the New York Giants at Giants Stadium. We’ve got the scoop on area bars that will be having parties and drink specials to celebrate the Redskins’ (we hope!) total domination.
Never made it out to any of the area end-of-summer county fairs? Worry not, your window hasn’t closed. The Prince George’s County Fair kicks off today and continues through the weekend at the Show Place Arena and Prince George’s Equestrian Center. For a measly $6 entrance, you’ll get all the agricultural fun you could dream of, plus food contests, a petting zoo, live music, monster-truck rallies, and more. Tonight from 4 to 10pm.
Marilyn Monroe fan? Then you’ll want to check out a (free!) screening this evening of Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, which features Monroe and Jane Russell as Two Little Girls From Little Rock, lounge singers on a transatlantic cruise to Paris. Free; 7 PM at the Library of Congress’s Mary Pickford Theater.
Friday, September 5: Head to AFI this evening for a screening of Michelangelo Antonioni’s iconic mod film Blow-Up and a DJ party afterward. The movie is at 9:30, and the dance fun gets started at 11 (and is free with the $10 movie ticket).
Of all the bands out there who try to emulate the ’60s psychedelic pop aspects of the Beatles (and believe us, there are a lot), the Philly group Dr. Dog is our absolute favorite. Their sloppy, joyous pop rock and harmonies will have you smiling. They play tonight at Iota. 9 PM; $15.
If we tell you there’s a huge dance party tonight that celebrates the end of summer by playing tons of great ’80s tunes, do you even need any more information? We didn’t think so. Black Cat main stage. 9:30 PM; $10.
Saturday, September 6: NOTE: THIS EVENT HAS BEEN CANCELED. Carrying over from last weekend, there’s another free outdoor jazz festival you should put on your radar. The Rosslyn Jazz Festival takes place in the Gateway Park and will feature Holly Cole and the Spanish Harlem Orchestra, among others. 12:30 to 7 PM.
Even if you’re not an art aficionado, you probably know Christo and Jean-Claude—the artists best known for their large-scale art installations that usually involve wrapping large buildings or natural spaces in fabric and metal. The duo will speak today at the Smithsonian American Art Museum about Running Fence, a movie about their project to build a nearly 25-mile-long fence of fabric and steel along the California coastline. 3 PM; free. Get tickets one hour before the show in the building’s G Street lobby.
Art Whino’s new exhibit, opening today at the National Harbor, sounds like a lot of fun. “Block Party” is a large installation of hundreds of small paintings on wooden blocks. A DJ will spin tunes afterward. 6 PM to midnight; free.
Whether you've been following the Walkmen since its early days in the local scene or first became interested in the band when the O.C.'s Summer called it her favorite band, like, ever, you know the guys put on a great live show. In concert, Singer Hamilton Leithauser's hoarse delivery has a way of reverberating over the guitar and organ-driven arrangements, making for songs that sound even more melancholic than when you first heard them on a record. So what if you can't always make out the lyrics, as long as you feel the pain. The Walkmen play at the 9:30 Club. Doors open at 6:30; $15.
Sunday, September 7: With summer wrapping up, that means lots of great museum exhibits that have run for a while now are ending. Today is the last day for lots of our favorite exhibits from over the summer, including these:
• “Shaolin: Temple of Zen,” a photography exhibit at the National Geographic Society Explorers Hall.
• “Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures From the National Museum, Kabul” at the National Gallery of Art’s East Building.
• “The Cinema Effect: Illusion, Reality and the Moving Image” at the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden.
• “Diebenkorn in New Mexico” at the Phillips Collection.
The fall installment of the Eastern Market Music Series kicks off today at (where else?) Eastern Market with a performance by Dead Men’s Hollow and Magpie, a bluegrass and jazz group, respectively. The music starts at 10:30 AM.
