Travel News: Fathers-and-Favorites Edition

Bad customer service, good treatment for fathers, and July 4 getaways

If you’ve flown Delta or Northwest recently, chances are you had something to complain about. In a study released Tuesday by the University of Michigan, the merged airline (now just Delta) was voted as having the worst food and the least-friendly flight attendants. Southwest Airlines was tops for general satisfaction and also won the vote for having the friendliest flight attendants and providing the best value. No say on whether Southwest attendants moonlight as emergency pilots, though.

Sunday is Father’s Day, but if you’ve forgotten all about it, have no fear. Northern Virginia has a host of activities for dads this weekend, including a barbecue at Potomac Point Winery in Stafford, a golf special at Augustine Golf Club, and a Cajun Festival at Breaux Vineyards in Purcellville. For equestrian dads, fashion designer Salvatore Ferragamo will be one of the celebrities participating in the fourth annual Capital Hospice Polo Cup Sunday, but no word yet on whether Real Househusband and polo aficionado Tareq Salahi is expected. Also check out our list of other Father’s Day activities in Washington here.

Where better to go for the Fourth of July than the birthplace of America? If the annual concert and fireworks display over the Liberty Bell aren’t incentive enough, here are two hotel deals worth checking out: Le Méridien, a chic new four-star hotel in downtown Philly is offering weekend specials valid from July 2 to September 5 for $99 a night. And Rittenhouse 1715, a boutique hotel just off trendy Rittenhouse Square is offering three nights for the price of two over Fourth of July and Labor Day weekends. The $269 per-night rate includes a complimentary wine reception and continental breakfast.

It’s traditionally a pricey time to travel, but Travelzoo is reporting slashed prices for Fourth of July weekend this year, with deals up to 80 percent off. The best include hotels and vacation packages. One flight deal we found this week: Round-trips from Reagan National Airport to Cabo, Mexico, for as low as $360 including taxes and fees. Fares are valid for the next four months.
