Sneak Preview: Hu’s Wear Opens in Georgetown

Move over, New York—DC’s got a newcomer on the style scene, and it’s nipping at your stylish gladiator sandals. Hu’s Wear opened Saturday at 29th and M streets in Georgetown, just a block down from sister store Hu’s Shoes.

The airy, two-level space (the basement level isn’t open yet) stocks unique designers, statement styles, and a small selection of handbags and jewelry from names such as Barbara Bui, Willow, Megan Park, and Bruno Grizzo, most of which are not shown in any other DC boutiques.

“In the past year, I’ve seen a stunning array of women’s ready-to-wear that truly speaks to the Hu’s client,” says owner Marlene Hu Adalba. “I’ve traveled to Milan, Paris, and New York and found pieces that really fill a void here in Washington.”

The carefully curated collection (only three or four of each piece are in stock) showcases an elegant yet approachable selection of basics with a twist, plus trend pieces that are as stunning as their prices deserve. Handmade jewels with thick semiprecious stones dress up simple tank dresses, while otherwise ordinary oxfords get a punch from a row of ruffles or flowing kimono sleeves.

The prices of most of these items are high: Most dresses start in the $400-to-$500 range and run up to about $900, while basics can be found for about $100 and up. A mix of items on the lower floor will include more contemporary designs and more entry-level prices, we’re told. For now, browse the racks—we snatched up the last of a floaty black-tee-and-silk-dress combo by Kaylee Tankus for just $100.

Even if the prices can be high, Hu’s Wear seeks to differentiate itself from the competition by carrying labels and clothing that can’t be found anywhere else. It’s likely going to become a go-to spot for women too young to be seen in Saks Jandel but craving more variety than they can find at Relish or other area boutiques.

“As a retailer that has pushed the envelope in accessories and footwear for four years, we just felt the time was right to apply that thinking to fashion,” says co-owner Eric Eden. “We are proud that our clients have continued to see the value in the uniqueness of our offerings.”
