Wear + When: Arena Stage Homecoming

Preppy basics + edgy accents = a smart look for a daytime arts jaunt

After years of development, the refurbished and expanded Arena Stage—the largest theater complex to debut in DC since the Kennedy Center in 1971—opens its doors for a celebratory “homecoming” this Saturday. Read about the day’s activities in our weekend guide, get further insight into what went into creating the space by reading our profile of artistic director Molly Smith, then go get yourself dressed—there’s culture to take in.

Here, an unapologetically primary color palette keeps preppy basics from looking stiff, and tiny rocker details—zippers on the shoes, studs on the bag—ground "prissy" comments to a halt. Boot-cut cords and casual layers keep you warm while walking about, and, in the final act, your workday trench, thrown effortlessly over the shoulders with a scarf round the neck, brings it all together.

THE PIECES:
ACNE Harmony silk back sweater, $260
Belle Sigerson Morrison point toe zipper flats, $225
Madewell abstract scarf, $62
Old Navy boot-cut cords, $34.50
Kate Spade Jingle Bell studs, $45
American Eagle striped Favorite shirt, $39.50
Karen Millen Investment coat, $630
Alexander Wang Rocco Mini Duffle, $875
