When Devin Holzbeierlein first showed up at her CrossFit class to find that Benjamin Trapp would be her trainer, she didn’t break a sweat—instead, she just kept focused on her workout. But the Navy airman had other plans, and it wasn’t long before the two were dating. Both native Marylanders with more than a touch of a patriotic streak, for their wedding the couple tied the knot in a beautiful Eastern Shore affair that included a photoshoot in front of a American flag mural on the side of a local barn. Another patriotic touch? The bride’s blue-and-white-striped wedges peeking out from beneath her princess gown. Photographs below courtesy of Astrid Photography.

When Devin first encountered her shirtless CrossFit coach, Ben, she was convinced he was full of himself. But she continued to show up at his 6:30 morning class, and the Navy airman soon was hooked on the cute blonde’s bright smile. One night, he stepped out of his comfort zone to join Devin, a nanny, at a yoga class.
“I spent the hour watching him sweat profusely, fall and slip all over his mat, attempt every yoga pose thrown at him, and never give up,” she remembers. “That was the beginning of everything.”
A year and eight months later, Ben proposed on the beach in Monterey, California during a birthday trip for Devin. Before the wedding, the couple’s pastor asked them each to write a letter detailing why they loved the other—not mentioning that he would later read parts aloud during the ceremony. “We were able to write exactly how we felt without worrying what people thought,” says the bride. “It was extremely touching.”
Both native Marylanders, the pair asked guests to inscribe their wishes on a wooden state flag in lieu of a guest book, and they embraced a nautical theme with a sailcloth tent and a beverage bar set up in a canoe. After celebrating their way through 60 pounds of fruit for orange-crush cocktails, guests ended the night with a chorus of “Don’t Stop Believing” before the couple headed off to honeymoon in Saint Lucia.
