Things to Do With Mom This Mother’s Day

Want to do something besides brunch this Mother’s Day? Here are some mom-worthy activities happening around town, from yoga classes to garden tours to a mother/daughter cooking class.

May 2 through 9: DC Yoga Week
Test-drive a yoga class with Mom at one of more than a dozen DC yoga studios, which are offering classes for free or $5 during DC Yoga Week. Check out the schedule for participating locations.

May 9: Georgetown Garden Tour
Eight of Georgetown’s gardens will be open for tours from 10 to 5 PM. Tickets purchased by May 2 are $30, and $35 after that, including the day of the event. Call 202-965-1950 for more information.

May 9: Mother's Day Kids' Cooking Class
From 11 to 1, head to Zola Wine & Kitchen for a kid-focused cooking class, where kids will learn to make and decorate flower-shaped cookies. The cookies will be arranged in a "garden basket" and wrapped up to take home for Mom. The price is $45 per adult-and-child pair. The class is designed for ages 8 and up. Call 202-654-2855 for more information and to reserve a spot.

May 9: Tickled Pink Fashion Show and Tea
Benefiting the Make-a-Wish Foundation of the Mid-Atlantic, this mother/daughter fashion show is back for its sixth year. Celebrity and model mother/daughter duos—including CBS anchor Lesli Foster and daughter Jordon and NPR’s Michele Norris and daughter Aja—will take to the runway to showcase the Lilly Pulitzer’s Tickled Pink spring and summer lines. In addition to the show, guests can enjoy tea and watercress-salmon-and-egg sandwiches, homemade scones, miniature chocolate-chip cookies, and more. Servers will pass glasses of kir royales and mimosas. The event is from 1 to 3 in the Fairmont hotel’s Colonnade room. Tickets are $100 for adults and $50 for kids. Contact Diana Bulger at 202-457-5019 or e-mail diana.bulger@fairmont.com for tickets.

May 9: Mother’s Day Tea Party
The Palisades Neighborhood Library (4901 V St., NW) is hosting a semi-formal tea party for moms and kids. Tea and snacks will be served at tables inspired by mothers from children’s books. Story time and a jewelry-making workshop round out the activities. The free event starts at 2 PM and is geared toward kids ages 6 to 12. To RSVP, call 202-282-3113 or e-mail Jessica Stork at jessica.stork@dc.gov.

May 9: Mommy’s Day Cupcake Party
From 2 to 6 on Mother's Day, Thyme Out in Rockville (11401 Woodglen Dr.) will host a cupcake decorating party for moms and kids. The shop will provide cupcakes and all the trimmings, plus a photographer from Labor of Love Photography will be on hand to shoot Mother's Day portraits. The first 50 guests will receive a goodie bag with treats to pamper mom. The event is free, but portraits will start at $4 for a 4-by-6 inch photo (the photographer will not charge a sitting fee). Call 240-221-2777 for more information.

May 9 and 10: Mommie Dearest
Watch and listen as eight storytellers share stories about moms and motherhood. Performers run the gamut from 8-year-old Meera Brown to award-winning poet Gayle Danley. SpeakeasyDC is hosting three shows at Chef Ike's Mambo Room (1725 Columbia Rd., NW): Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 3 and 6. Bring mom, and the venue will give her a special Mother's Day gift. Tickets ($15) can be purchased online here.

May 9 and 10: Spring Garden Party at Mount Vernon
Take Mom to George Washington’s 500-acre estate to peruse plants and garden items at the annual garden-and-gift sale. Musicians will play Early American music in the upper and lower gardens, and in honor of Mother’s Day, “Mrs. Washington” will share her insights on motherhood—with a late-18th-century flair. Grounds open 8 to 5. Admission is $15.

May 10: Mother's Day Tea at Tudor Place
From 10 AM to 12 PM and 1 to 3, Tudor Place in Georgetown is hosting an early American tea party, complete with finger sandwiches, desserts, and, of course, tea. Kids can make a special craft for Mom. Call 202-965-0400 for information.

May 10: Spa Treatments at Equinox Fitness Club
Turn Mother’s Day into a spa day at Equinox Fitness in Vienna. The special Mother’s Day spa packages range from $99 for a 50-minute facial or massage to $550 for a package of five 50-minute massages or facials with a complimentary sixth treatment. Call 703-790-6193 for more information.
