Luxury in the Wilderness

Where: North Fork Mountain Inn, Cabins, West Virginia; 304-257-1108.

What’s special: A member of Select Registry,
the premier innkeeping association in the United States and Canada,
North Fork Mountain Inn
bills itself as “an outpost of luxury in the wilderness.” By
day, you can take in majestic views of Smoke Hole Valley from
the front porch; at night, you can stargaze–a telescope is
available for guests. The three-story log-cabin inn has ten rooms,
including private cabins. Some rooms have fireplaces, others
have whirlpool tubs, and some have both. Innkeepers Ed and Carol
Fischer are good cooks and keep a jar of homemade cookies
waiting by the door for guests. The included breakfast features
fresh fruit, homemade bread, and a hot entrée such as eggs
Florentine or Sleep Late French Toast. Guests can go hiking,
birdwatching,
golfing, antiquing, or paragliding. Other local attractions
include Seneca Rocks, Blackwater Falls, the Cass Scenic Railroad,
and the National Radio Astronomy Observatory.

Washingtonian readers receive 15 percent off the room rate and a free bottle of wine. Prices before the discount range from $145 to $215
a night.

award-winning Arnold Palmer layout; Grande Dunes; and Pine Lakes,
which was designed by Scotland native Robert White and is on
the National Register of Historic Places. The hotel sits alone
on a 7½-acre “island” surrounded by beautiful beachfront and
wetlands, which provide stunning views of the Atlantic Ocean
from private balconies. The resort has several pools, a “lazy
river” water park, hot tubs, a steak-and-sushi restaurant, a
spa, and a fitness center. Spirit Airlines offers direct
flights during the summer.
