Ten Under $10: Fun on a Budget

Nerd Nite returns, and a cartoonist takes questions

The National Museum of African Art’s North African Film Festival continues Thursday with a screening of Raja, the story of a 19-year-old orphan who befriends a wealthy Westerner. 7 to 9. Free.

Alt-electronica group the Twelves is performing at U Street Music Hall Thursday, along with Autorock and Mr. Bonkerz. 10 PM. $10.

“Resonant Forms,” a new exhibit featuring art by Alonzo Davis, Martha Jackson-Jarvis, and Frank Smith, opens at the Brentwood Arts Exchange (3901 Rhode Island Ave., Brentwood) this weekend. The gallery is throwing a reception for the show Friday at 5. Free.

Cartoonist Nick Galifianakis—yes, he’s related to The Hangover scene-stealer Zach—is signing copies of If You Loved Me, You’d Think This Was Cute at Politics and Prose Friday. The book features cartoons that illustrated the Washington Post’s advice guru Carolyn Hax’s columns. 7 PM. Free.

There’s an opening reception for “Paint Mix,” a new exhibit at the DC Arts Center featuring local artists, Friday from 7 to 9. Free.

The Textile Museum is hosting a family festival Saturday, featuring Central Asian music and food, hands-on arts activities, and a performance by the Silk Road Dance Company. The museum will serve tea and other refreshments. Noon to 4. Free.

Director Jem Cohen is presenting a program of his new short films at the National Gallery Saturday, including several works-in-progress. The screening starts at 2:30, and Cohen will be on hand to answer questions about his work. Free.

Nerd Nite returns to DC9 Saturday, featuring three short presentations on decidedly geeky topics. Doors open at 6:30; the show starts at 7. $10.

Salve, a 2010 film that follows two parallel stories of grandmothers and grandchildren, screens at the Freer Gallery Saturday evening. It’s part of the museum’s Iranian Film Festival. 7 PM. Free.

Visit the “US Department of Bhangra” at Black Cat Saturday, a dance party inspired by the popular Indian music. There’s even a lesson for those new to the dance form. 9:30. $7.
