Monday, August 4: Rock with Rickeys
It’s a classic—a gin rickey, a refreshing drink invented at a bar called Shoemaker’s on Pennsylvania Avenue all the way back in the 1890s. To celebrate this drink, several great local bartenders (from spots like Central to Bar Pilar to EatBar, who gave us their own special rickey recipe) have been crafting their own special versions all month long. Tonight at Bourbon, the winner of the best Gin Rickey will be revealed—and rickeys will be drunk all night long. 6 PM.
Tuesday, August 5: Birthday at the Black Cat
It’s a great annual tradition—every year, when it’s bartender Chad America’s birthday, the Black Cat opens itself for a big ol’ party and a free concert. Local rockers Suns of Guns, Citygoats and John Barrett’s Bass Drum of Death play the backstage. Free; 9 PM.
Wednesday, August 6: Jerry Springer: The Opera
It’s true—the notorious talk show is now an opera, and it’s showing at the Studio Theatre to rave reviews. Our critic says it’s a “hilarious send-up of human-demolition-derby talk shows, with dynamite performances.” 8:30 PM; $39.
Thursday, August 7: Aussie Up
The Smithsonian Young Benefactors is hosting a happy hour tonight at the Australian Embassy to celebrate the opening of an exhibition of silk batiks by indigenous Australians. For a donation of $10, you’ll get the chance to view the exhibit, sip beer and wine, and mingle. 6 PM. RSVP to yb@si.edu by Monday.
