It Rained on Their Wedding Day. You Have to See the Indoor Ceremony They Had Instead.

Necessity was the mother of invention at Jodi Hawn and John Kurcis’ Virginia vineyard wedding, where a rainstorm turned their outdoor vows into an intimate, standing ceremony indoors. Take a look at their beautiful day in the photos below by Lisa Boggs Photography.

Not long after Jodi moved from Nashville to DC, a low-key happy hour with mutual friends introduced her to John. “He was funny, engaging, and charming,” she says. “I remember he wasn’t really trying to impress me, but just get to know me, which was refreshing.” A first date for afternoon drinks on the Georgetown waterfront sealed their fate.

Two years later, John told Jodi he’d planned a getaway to a Virginia vineyard for their anniversary. “I thought the weekend was extremely casual because my normally dapper boyfriend was wearing cargo shorts,” says Jodi. “It turns out cargo short are excellent for hiding ring boxes.” After wine tasting, John took Jodi to the Inn at Little Washington for dinner, where he proposed in the garden.

Though they’d planned to exchange vows outside against the backdrop of the Virginia countryside, when rain poured down on their day, Jodi and John were forced to move their ceremony inside. An impromptu standing ceremony ended up providing the set-up for some amazing photos of the pair surrounded by loved ones. “Our wedding was an intimate ceremony with everyone circled around us, and the pictures were something I never could have planned but exactly what I always wanted,” says Jodi.

Their rustic reception was accented with painted Mason jars as centerpieces and wine corks with the couple’s name and wedding date at each place setting. Cupcakes in three different flavors were served from a ladder-turned-bar before the newlyweds departed under a sparkler send-off for their honeymoon in Italy and Greece.
