Bride on a Budget: Bonding With Bridesmaids

Finding the right women to help out on your wedding day

Stephanie’s sister Jenny has always been her biggest cheerleader.

My friend Lauren said it best: “Your bridesmaids should be the people you call to help you move the dead body.” Now, I really hope I’m never in that situation, but at least I know I have a good group of girls who’ll be there for me no matter what life brings.

Picking my maid of honor was easy. My older sister Jenny has always been like a second mom to me. I know I can call her anytime and she’ll give me truthful and honest advice. When we were growing up, she always set a great example for me, and I’ve learned a lot from her, especially from the way she makes everyone around her feel comfortable and at ease. It’s a compliment to be known as Jenny’s little sister because she’s such a wonderful person. Obviously, I want her standing next to me on my wedding day.

I decided to ask Matt’s sister to be a part of my bridal party, too. It’s really important to me and Matt that our family be included on this special day. Each time I visit Matt’s family in New York, I feel like we become closer, so it means a lot to me that his sister agreed to be a bridesmaid. Sarah is really smart and hilarious, and every time I see her, she makes me laugh with her witty comments. She’ll add a lot of fun to the bridal party.

I’m very fortunate to have become close with a fantastic group of girls in college. Laura has been my best friend and frequent roommate. She’s been with me through good times, bad times, and lots of practical jokes. I love that despite her tough, gun-toting exterior as a US marshal, she’s actually one of the sweetest, most genuine, and loyal people ever. And my friend Lauren, who lives in Dallas, is a great source of advice. I know I can call her anytime, every day or once a month, and we’ll pick up right where we left off. Lauren’s work ethic is admirable; she dedicates herself 100 percent to everything from law school to her friendships.

I’ve known Jana since our (okay, maybe just my) first awkward days as freshmen. We’ve been through a lot together, and I’ve always been impressed by her amazing inner strength. She’s also very generous with her time. Even though she’s busy as an associate at a big New York law firm, she always makes time to listen to me and help me with anything.

I’m grateful that all of these wonderful women will be my bridesmaids.

Because I really appreciate the time and sacrifice that these girls will make to be a part of my wedding, I wanted to pick a fantastic dress for them to wear. I went with a lovely style from the Alfred Angelo bridesmaid line in eggplant. It’s the kind of dress that will look great on everyone. I can’t wait to see how gorgeous these girls will look at my wedding!
